LIVE session and curated Spotify Playlist by DJ MK-1.

Rap as we know it today started back in the early 70’s but rap has always been with us since music was first recorded, some might argue even early, it all depends how deep you want to go and in which way you define it. ‘Proto-Rap’ had its roots well before HipHop in various Genres like the Blues, Big Band, Jazz, Soul Music, Disco and Pop. It came in many forms from rhyming to a syncopated beat to spoken word.

As the History Books has it, HipHop began in 1973. The first Rap record was made in 1979. So between the years of 1973-1979 before rap records, what were HipHop Deejays playing? Here is a snapshot of the type of music played in the Early Park jams and Coronation Halls.

What originally was a 15 day festival of robust scheduling in 11 locations, with 24 collaborative events, and over 100 artists and industry professionals will now be stretched out till the 5th of September.

4ESydney is the only festival and project of its kind, specialising in HipHop culture and multi artform, interdisciplinary practice. It acts as a meeting ground, a space where community, industry and education meet, to create unique opportunities for the growth and preservation of HipHop culture, professional development and industry sustainability. For the community, by the community, 4ESydney, now heading into its 6th year, continues to gradually build a global infrastructure and platform for HipHop in Australia.
